- Full-text (Retrieves citations that have an article linked)
- Boolean - AND, OR, NOT /see Subjects column in result list
- Field searching in ERIC (Look up the descriptors in the Thesaurus first)
- Field searching in Academic Search Complete (Look up the subjects under Subject Terms)
- Quotation marks for exact phrase
- Asterisk to retrieve all forms of a word: child* retrieves child, children, children's
